● Sarusawa Pond & Kofukuji Temple Five-Storied Pagoda Kofukuji Temple in Nara also known as “Deer Park”. The five-storied pagoda, as well as the willow trees surrounding the pond, reflect beautifully in the water and are recognized as one of the Eight Views of Nara. There is a shrine hidden in the northwest corner of the pond called “The Uneme Shrine”. During the Nara period, a maid of the court (uneme in Japanese) drowned herself in the lake following a love affair with the Emperor. The Shrine was built to pray for the soul of the maid and comfort the other Uneme. Legend says that the Uneme Shrine was originally built to face the lake however, it could not face the scene of the suicide and turned itself around overnight.
